2002 VENTANA PINOT NOIR
Winemaking Notes
Ventana Pinot NoirWith typical Hollywood fanfare, Pinot Noir is a very sought-after wine! For us at Ventana, we see it as a varietal that truly shows the characteristics of its home (Terroir). It has wine lovers across the nation trying different styles from many different regions. Our Pinot thrives in its cooler growing region (Arroyo Seco AVA, Monterey) with lots of time slowly ripening on the vine. It is very limited in production.
After a typical Ventana Vineyard Arroyo Seco long growing season, the Pinot Noir grapes were harvested in mid-September 2002 at 24.5 Brix. Fermentation was accomplished in 5 Ton open top fermentors and hand punched 3 times a day, for 8 days. After gentle pressing when the wine was completely dry, it then completed malo-lactic fermentation in tank. At the completion of M-L, it was aged in Mercury barrels (French Burgundian Oak) for 18 months.
Tasting Notes Brilliant in appearance, the wine has a reddish-purple color, with aromas of cherry, vanilla and a hint of cedar. On the palate, the wine is rich with cherry and strawberry flavors followed by vanilla with a hint of oak. The wine is very drinkable now but will cellar quite well.
