2004 MEADOR ESTATE "MAGNUS" RED BORDEAUX BLEND
Winemaking Notes
New Release: Available March 1, 2007
"Magnus" is the name of our "Bordeaux" Blend, a 2004 vintage. Doug is calling it a Proprietor Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, all Bordeaux varietals. "We blend the three varietals to create a composite that is smoother and better than each on its own", states Doug. "Each of the grape types bring wonderful attributes to the wine. The Cabernet Sauvignon grape gives the wine its backbone and ageability, Cabernet Franc is the spice of the wine and Merlot brings it all together with fresh berry flavors and a smooth mouth-feel."
Magnus is a historical name. Albertus Magnus was the mentor to and defender of St. Thomas Aquinas. More importantly, he was an early proponent of the "experimental method as a determiner of physical "truths"". Doug Meador has definitely used these methods in determining the best blend, optimum fruit and proper barrel aging of the 2004 Magnus wine.
Tasting Notes
Its lower alcohol 13.3%, is of the Old World wine making techniques while the mouth filling richness and body is of the new. The French Oak barrel aging and detailed farming has resulted in Gold Medal recognition already in its short existence. Hand selected grapes, open top fermenting and barrel aging in quality French Oak all contribute to a wine that is smooth, supple and generous. Magnus displays a solid core of ripe berry and black current flavors in an elegant medium body with a long finish. This wine is well worth aging.
