Dear Meador Estate Friends and Family,

In midwifing the birth of the “Great Monterey Wine Region,” I have faced many naysayers. Initially, the gurus slammed all wines from Monterey. Then, in their minds, Monterey became the great white wine county but the reds were “impossible”. The Meador Estate artisan wines were “demonstration” wines to display that simply wasn’t true. Monterey makes incredible award-winning wines.

The wines of Meador Estate are unique expressions of their terroir, focused by intensely specific viticulture and old-world winemaking techniques. By their nature they are of very limited production.

All of our resources, terroir, skill and knowledge come together in these wines: age of vines, location recognition, soil structure, farming research application, winemaking knowledge, artistic sensibility and our passion for Magnificent Monterey and its Arroyo Seco appellation. In these wines made with care, you can hear the whisper of Doug’s footsteps in the vineyard and winery. In the label you can see LuAnn’s artistry tiptoeing right along. In your glass you will find the synthesis of the care taken by many, many people – the care of the vine, the care of the wine and the care in presentation upon your table.

They have been legendary,  garnering Golds and Silvers from Paris to L.A. among the finest wines of the world. My work at a research vineyard and winery has come to the end after 34 yrs of dedication to the wine industry.

My work now is to pass on all the theories which led to the vineyard designs you see around you. My new adventure is writing. I have now written a book and the publishing process is underway. It is titled The New Viticulture, and covers its development history and research for the future. It is due to be released in the 1st quarter of 2009.

I have laid down no more grapes the last few years. The present Meador Estate wines are the last from my hands. I am incredibly proud of them. We only have approximately 100 or fewer cases left in inventory of each varietal.

LuAnn and I would like to sincerely thank you for your friendships, encouragement and support all these incredible years we have enjoyed in the wine industry.

Our Sincere Thanks,

Doug and LuAnn Meador
